KING’S WAY
” King’s Way “ (2018. 392x575cm. Digital printed Sinterflex tiles. Site specific installation) specially developed for the 6th Canakkale Biennale. The exhibition took place in the ancient city of TROY (nowadays Canakkale). For this exhibition S.Kocyigit produced a site-specific installation. It is a tile map showing the 10 year journey of King Odysseus’ return to home (TROY) after the Trojan War. The Map is digitally printed on large-scale tiles at one of the tile factories in the Canakkale region. The map is based on Homer ‘s book, “The Odyssey”. It is a literal translation of a book to a map. “ The Odyssey“ mentions the geography of ancient Greece, but obviously most of it is fictionalised. Artist wanted the visitors to walk on the map and break the tiles to smaller pieces during the exhibition. He wanted leave a modern layer to this history.
Most of history is created by destruction. When the work is
broken into smaller fragments it is gets harder to read the whole map. In exactly same way is how we read history, by its fragments. There is a large archaeological site at ancient Troy, with excavations going on for many years, now with a new museum. This works fits well to the region, and it’s history.
