The work “ Soft Landing “ (2020, 420x360cm (four parts each 210x180cm) Silk Embroidery on satin quilt) was developed and produced during the “ International Artists Residency Program “ with Istanbul Modern Museum (2019). The Idea behind the residency was to invite international artists to Istanbul and match them with local crafts people to produce new works. S.Kocyigit worked with traditional Turkish quilt makers and embroidery makers for this project. After extensive research of the history of Istanbul and an important Turkish cartographer, Piri Reis (late 15th and 16th century) He created a large-scale ‘satin’ map using traditional quilt making technique. Images embroidered with silk treads by hand on to satin. The map is much in the style of 16th century maps- but using modern images. In ancient maps there are less graphics- but more images. They were using lots of images to describe geographies, landscapes, and fauna or tell specific story about that part of the world.“ Soft Landing “ is inspired by Istanbul but it is not a map of Istanbul. This map shows images of little (environmental) disasters, like burning Boing 757 plane.
